EdenPrairieNews > Rosie, a service dog in training, has her foster home in Eden Prairie. As the foster home trainers, Jennifer and John Urbanski will care for and train Rosie to be a service dog. Eventually Rosie will be matched to a person with a physical disability.
EdenPrairieNews > As one of the Helping Paws foster home trainers, Jennifer and John Urbanski have been providing a home and care for Rosie since she was born last March. They’ll continue to train her for the next 18 months, teaching her everything from how to retrieve the phone, to handling public transit, to pulling off and offering up clothing.
EdenPrairieNews > Jennifer Urbanski works with Rosie. The Urbanskis attend training class once a week and spend about an hour a day training Rosie to be a service dog through Helping Paws. The organization will eventually match the dog to a person with disabilities. Rosie will be trained to take on a number of duties, from providing affection to retrieving dropped objects, to opening and closing doors.
EdenPrairieNews > Rosie must be ready to anticipate those needs and handle any new challenges that may emerge. For the Urbanskis, the experience has been eye-opening to the challenges faced by those with disabilities and to the joys of dog ownership without the long-term commitment.
EdenPrairieNews > Jennifer Urbanski said she spends about an hour a day training Rosie. Once a week, she takes Rosie to training class in Hopkins.
EdenPrairieNews > Helping Paws is always looking for foster families such as the Urbanskis to help train the puppies in their program. The nonprofit organization’s mission is to “further the independence of individuals with physical disabilities through the use of service dogs.” Since 2003, the organization has run its own breeding program that includes mostly golden retrievers and Labrador retrievers
EdenPrairieNews > The organization relies on a network of foster homes to train the puppies. The dogs are given to applicants at no charge aside from an application and equipment fee.
EdenPrairieNews > Interested in becoming a foster home for a service dog? Contact Nancy Hiebert, foster home coordinator at 952-988-9359, Ext. 64, or e-mail nhiebert@helpingpaws.org.
EdenPrairieNews > Not only do service dogs provide companionship for those with physical disabilities, but their presence can make others more comfortable in approaching those who are disabled.
